BIO
Stev’nn Hall is a Canadian contemporary visual artist based in Hamilton, Ontario. A Concordia University cinema graduate from Montreal, Hall first immersed himself in film and media — directing music videos in Vancouver and co-founding the nonprofit This Spark Film Group. In Toronto, he built a successful career as an award-winning television promo producer while pursuing independent filmmaking. His short works screened internationally, including at Paris’s Pompidou Centre. Hall’s television appearances include CBC’s Star Portraits, where he won the competition painting a portrait of Blue Rodeo’s singer Jim Cuddy.
In the late 2000s, Hall began blending photography with painting, evolving from experimental filmmaking into portraiture and ultimately into his signature mixed-media artworks on birch panels. His process – layering digital collage with oils, acrylics, ink, and pastel – blurs the boundary between photography and painting to create emotionally charged, cinematic landscapes and portraits.
Hall’s work often explores transformation, identity, and human psychology, themes that trace back to his early portrait photography and film addressing LGBTQ+ subjects. His photographic portraiture, noted for depicting the psychology of queer experience, was described as “confrontational and seductive” by writer R.M. Vaughan in The Globe and Mail, and his satirical short film Bondage Television – a critique of male aggression in Hollywood cinema – was extensively analyzed by film scholar Thomas Waugh.
His mixed-media artworks have been featured in major art publications and blogs including Creative Boom, My Modern Met and Colossal, which praised his technique of applying paint and varnish to distressed photographs to evoke dreamlike, hyperreal scenes. Hall’s pictorial subjects often reinterpret art-historical themes, from Monet’s Water Lilies to expansive provincial landscapes and dramatic cloudscapes rendered with a painterly sense of light and atmosphere.
Over the past decade, Hall’s work has been exhibited widely across Canada, the U.S., and Europe, and is held in prominent private and corporate collections such as The Ritz-Carlton Toronto and Fallsview Casino. Working full time from his Hamilton studio, Stev’nn Hall continues to expand his distinctive voice in contemporary Canadian art through an evocative fusion of cinema, photography, and painting.
